FT8 is the weak-signal digital mode developed by Nobel Laureate Joe Taylor (K1JT) and Steve Franke (K9AN) that transformed HF operating when it was released in 2017. A properly set-up FT8 station can make contacts with stations 10โ€“15 dB below what SSB voice requires โ€” which means you can work DX on a wire antenna with modest power when phone operators on the same band can't hear a thing. Here's how to get set up from scratch.

What you need: An HF transceiver, a computer (Windows/Mac/Linux), a USB cable or audio interface connecting them, an antenna, and a free internet time-sync. That's it.

How FT8 Actually Works

FT8 exchanges happen in tightly structured 15-second transmit/receive cycles. Each transmission carries a compressed message โ€” callsigns, signal report, and grid square โ€” encoded with enough forward error correction to decode at signal levels the human ear can't detect. The software handles everything: timing, decoding, and composing replies. Your job is to pick a station, click their callsign, and let the sequence run.

This is a feature, not a bug. FT8 doesn't replace the conversational warmth of SSB โ€” it's a completely different tool, used for working rare DX, logging new countries, and checking propagation. Most active operators use both.

Step-by-Step Setup

Download and Install WSJT-X

Go to physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/wsjtx.html and download the current stable version for your operating system. Install it and launch it. The first-run wizard will ask for your callsign and grid square โ€” find your 6-character grid square at QTH.org or via QRZ.com's grid lookup. This is required for FT8 contacts to count.

Sync Your Computer Clock

FT8 timing is critical โ€” if your clock is off by more than 1โ€“2 seconds, you won't decode properly. On Windows, install Meinberg NTP (free) and let it run. On Mac, use the built-in Network Time settings. Check your time at time.is โ€” it should show within 0.5 seconds.

Connect Your Radio

IC-7300: Connect a USB-A cable from radio to computer. Windows should install drivers automatically. In WSJT-X Settings โ†’ Radio: set Rig to "Icom IC-7300", select the correct COM port, Baud rate 19200, PTT method "CAT". In Audio settings, select "IC-7300 USB Audio CODEC" for both input and output. Done โ€” no SignaLink needed.

Other rigs: Use a SignaLink USB or RigBlaster. Connect audio in/out to your rig's accessory port or mic/speaker jacks. Set PTT to "VOX" in WSJT-X or use the SignaLink's PTT circuit.

Set Audio Levels

This is the most common stumbling block. Set your radio's audio output to about 50% โ€” you want a clean signal on the WSJT-X waterfall display (a medium blue/green). For TX, set the rig's power to 25โ€“30W and use the WSJT-X power slider to keep ALC movement minimal on your radio's meter. Overdrive causes splatter and will get you complained about on the DX clusters.

Go to 20m FT8 and Listen

Set your radio to 14.074 MHz USB. In WSJT-X, select Mode โ†’ FT8. The waterfall should immediately fill with signals โ€” dozens of colored traces representing stations decoding simultaneously. If you see nothing, check your audio connection. The decode list on the left will show callsigns, signal reports, and grid squares as the software decodes each 15-second cycle.

Make Your First Contact

Click "Enable Tx" and double-click any decoded station calling CQ. WSJT-X will handle the exchange automatically โ€” transmitting on the next available odd or even cycle, replying to their signal report, and logging the contact when complete. Your first successful decode-to-log sequence takes about 90 seconds total. Check PSKReporter.info shortly after โ€” you'll see a map of stations hearing your signal in near real-time.

Common Problems and Fixes

No signals decoding

Check that your audio input is set to the radio's USB codec in WSJT-X settings. Check that your radio is actually on the correct dial frequency. Try a fresh WSJT-X settings file if you've changed things repeatedly.

Clock off โ€” seeing signals but decodes are late

Your computer clock is drifting. Install Meinberg NTP or force a time sync. The status bar in WSJT-X shows your timing offset after a successful decode โ€” anything beyond ยฑ2 seconds needs correction.

TX splatter / complaints on clusters

Your audio drive is too high. Reduce the WSJT-X power slider and watch your rig's ALC meter โ€” it should barely move. Clean FT8 signals occupy only about 50 Hz of spectrum. Splattered signals can occupy 500 Hz and will be flagged by other operators.

Contacts not appearing in log

WSJT-X logs to its own ADIF file (File โ†’ Open Log Directory). Import this into your main logging software (Log4OM, Ham Radio Deluxe, N3FJP, etc.) periodically. The LoTW upload feature in WSJT-X also handles Logbook of the World submissions directly.

What to Do After Your First Contact

Set a goal. DXCC (100 countries) is achievable in months of FT8 operation with a modest antenna and 100W. WAS (Worked All States) is achievable in weeks. Many operators pursue FT8 Round the World โ€” a contact with a station on every continent in a single day. Once you understand band openings and can read the PSKReporter map, the game gets genuinely addictive.
