What Counts as a POTA Park?

- Check for permit requirements โ Most public lands don't require a permit for amateur radio operation, but some do. Check the park's website or call the ranger station if you're unsure. Being proactive avoids awkward conversations mid-activation.
- Set up your station โ Find a suitable location (a parking area, picnic site, or open area) and deploy your antenna and radio. Note your exact operating location so you can confirm you're within the park boundary.
- Spot yourself on pota.app โ Enter your callsign, the park reference number (e.g. K-1234), frequency, mode, and a comment. Your activation will appear on the live spotting map and chasers will start calling within minutes.
- Make 10 contacts โ Call CQ POTA on your spotted frequency and log contacts. On 20m SSB during business hours, 10 contacts typically takes 15โ30 minutes after spotting. On FT8, you can hit 10 in under 10 minutes.
- Upload your log โ Export your ADIF log from HAMRS and upload it at pota.app within a few days. The system processes it, credits your chasers, and adds the activation to your record.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of POTA
- 20m SSB is your friend โ If you only operate one band and mode, make it 20m SSB during daylight hours. The chasers are there, the pileups are real, and you'll have your 10 contacts quickly.
- FT8 is a backup, not a cop-out โ FT8 POTA activations are entirely valid and extremely efficient. On a day when bands are marginal or you're running very low power, FT8 guarantees a successful activation where SSB might not.
- Hunter-to-activator ratio is huge โ There are far more chasers than activators. Once you're spotted, people will call you. Don't be intimidated by the pileup โ just take them one at a time.
- Plan for a two-fer โ Many parks overlap with other qualifying references (a state park inside a national forest, for example). One operation counts for both references. Check the pota.app map carefully before your visit.

Working the same park twice doesn't count twice for Hunter totals, but a second activation at the same park earns the activator full credit for that activation.
Finding Active POTA Stations
The POTA spotting network at pota.app is the real-time hub. The map view shows active activators by frequency and band โ click any pin to see the callsign, park reference, frequency, and mode. The list view lets you filter by band. Most serious POTA hunters have pota.app open in a browser tab during operating sessions and check it throughout the day.
Self-spotting is encouraged and expected. Once you're set up at a park, post your spot to pota.app with your frequency and mode. Chasers worldwide will start calling within minutes on popular bands. On 20m SSB between 10 AM and 2 PM local time, expect to have a pileup within 60 seconds of posting a spot during good propagation.
